With the birth of Christ, Christianity essentially begins; thus, Christmas also celebrates the beginning of Christianity. This is just a brief description of what Christmas is or is supposed to be.  Christmas should be a time for family to come together no matter what their differences are and share in a time of peace and good will.  However in today's society we are just too busy trying to get that one special gift for that one special person to really remember what Christmas is all about.  Because Christmas has become so commercial we are always looking for the great deal.  There is Black Friday (that you could not pay me enough to part take in), there is Cyber Monday (which is today) but there is not one day for Shop Local First. Why is that?  Do we not think about all the small businesses around our community that makes up the community that we live in?  Do you have a favorite coffee house? Favorite restaurant?  Favorite little get away?  I bet those are all local shops and businesses.  IF that is the case then why do you not have that great place in town to go get that great Christmas gift?  Do you just simply forget about all the great places around Indy and surrounding areas because of the hustle and bustle of the season? Did you know that small business makes up the majority of your community?  Sure we have all the big box stores like Wal-Mart, Kroger, Meijer, and etc. but they all have the same things in them.  The shops in Broad Ripple, along Mass Ave, Beech Grove and Southport just to name a few are what makes Indianapolis special.  What are you doing to support those businesses?  Think of the advantage of visiting these businesses, less of a crowd, personal one on one help, great deals, one of a kind items, and the best part you are helping to support the small business owner. I know we all get wrapped up in the Holiday Season but I ask each and every one of you to visit just one small business during this holiday season and thanking them for being there.  Remember to SHOP LOCAL FIRST!
